I. PLAYER ONE

It was one of the hottest games in Japan when it came to battle mech simulators. It hadn't even released in the states yet, despite the fact that it was given a Japanese release almost two years ago. Zenesis Evangelion. So, when Sigmund had heard that a local arcade was surging in popularity after receiving an exclusive set of arcade boxes from Zony, he simply had to figure out exactly what game was causing such a commotion. And, lo and behold, it was an arcade fighter built around the characters (their mechs, in particular) in ZenGel. And he simply had to play it.

So, having snuck away from the hotel his school had reserved for their student exchange program, the young blonde had taken a few trains to get to Akihabara himself. He'd almost gotten lost a couple of times in the urban sprawl surrounding the city. But he nonetheless managed to get there with the currency he intended to use on video games and food more or less completely intact. Rather proud of himself for it, the young lad stopped to reward himself with a coffee in a can from one of the many vending machines on the side of the street. After cracking open the lid and taking a rich sip, he would then head off in search of the infamous Moshimoshi Arcade.

Akihabara was like a fever dream for gamers and otaku. One that Sigmund didn't necessarily want to wake from. There were lights everywhere, quaint little gift shops and enticing maid cafés. And, of course, plenty of arcades. Legions of them. It made him sort of dizzy at first, and he had to stop and wonder whether the coffee was a good idea, but it wasn't long before his senses adjusted to the onslaught of noise and colorful visuals. The very air seemed to be filled with electric and excitement, and he absolutely adored it.

He wasn't quite sure how long he'd been walking around in it all before he actually found the Moshimoshi Arcade. Once he did, however, he had finished his coffee in a can and tossed it into one of the trash bins inside. The arcade was rather large and filled with the constant sounds of 8-bit. He had to stop at its entrance and soak it all in for a while, a wide and pleasant grin on his face as he realized this was probably what his heaven looked like. A rather big part of it, anyway.

Squinting his hazel eyes and scanning the arcade boxes before him, he searched for the game he had specifically come here for: Zenesis Evangelion: Battle-Z. He'd done his research on the internet prior and made sure he remembered how the box looked like. As such, he spotted it almost instantly. But, of course, someone was already there. Hoping this person spoke english, but also willing to practice his Japanese a bit more, he walked over to them and took his place before the 'player two' controls. "Hiya!" He smiled brightly. "Would you mind a player two?"

"Gomen tomo yo! Ikanakute wa. [Sorry friend! I gotta go.]"

There was hardly any time for either boy to interact with one another as the male who already had his position at the gaming set lost in his match. When approached, he checked his watch only to notice he was late. Late for what? Something or other, but he no longer had the time to leisurely play games, especially with a foreigner.

On the other hand.. A girl with long light brown hair tied in two large pig-tails had walked into the gaming center not long after the boy had. Wearing very wide, slick glasses, she had the fortunate opportunity to spot someone creating undue waste in their neighbourhood. A boy of dirty blonde hair had tossed his can into the garbage bin, and that was just unacceptable in these times. Following him up, she stuck her arm into the garbage bin without flinching and took a hold of his can before appropriately disposing it within the recyling bin.

She spotted the mannerless boy engaging with another at a gaming station, and so took the opportunity to wipe off her hand with a wet disinfectant wipe before tossing that in the appropriate bin.

Now she could teach him some manners.

Once the stranger at the gaming station had quickly grabbed his briefcase and ran off, the girl approached the initial boy and placed a hand on his shoulder from the side.

"Chotto yosomono! Yomenai ne? [Hey stranger! Can't read, can ya?]"

The blonde barista had certainly learned more Japanese in the past week or so of being here than he had in the entirety of his classes back at UoTC. But he certainly wasn't fluent yet. As such, he placed his hand on the pocket dictionary in his jacket when the potential challenger spoke... then removed it as soon as the challenger picked up their briefcase and walked away. Sigmund certainly didn't need to know what the young man had said to understand that he was late for something: it was all in the body language, after all. And, despite the fact that he always endeavored to learn as much Japanese as he could, the young man depended more on physical tells than he cared to admit.

Shrugging it off, however, he turned the entirety of his attention to the arcade box. It was all his now. He was so excited! Stepping forward towards the token machine at the side, he was prepared to quickly pay for his tokens with his card and start playing. But, unfortunately for him, he had answer to a certain civilian that had seen him accidentally toss his can in the garbage bin instead of the recycling. When he felt the hand on his shoulder, Sigmund turned around with a curious smile that melted away into surprise the moment he saw the young girl's wrathful demeanor. Certainly confused at her attitude and only really understanding the word 'stranger', he tilted his head to one side and replied. "G-Gomenasai? [S-Sorry?]" There was a pause in-between. But when he realized it was probably the polite and right thing to bow, his hazel eyes grew two sizes larger and he immediately did so. "Watashi wa nihongo ga heta desu! [I speak very little Japanese!]"

"Ch-chikushou.. Mmn.. [D-damn it.. Hmm..]"

Now this was an issue. This stranger was most definitely a foreigner at this point. His Japanese was not so clean and with what words he did understand and use he made it be known that he didn't speak the language quite so thoroughly either. This was bad for them then, since Chidori's English wasn't so great either. A language barrier had been established between them that they'd only be able to get through using gestures and very rough sentences based on the other's language. Being raised to be a respectable person of society though, Chidori was going to make an attempt to converse with him on his level.

"E-Eto.. [U-um..] T-turash. Su..row cans in.. Err.. Buroo bin."

Chidori's face construed with visible, but slight, confusion and frustration. They taught English in school but her understanding of it was honestly low due to her lack of consistency with utilizing it. She didn't have a penpal and she didn't watch a lot of English television as suggested by her instructors and friends. That isn't to say she neglected her English at all times, but it was plain as day at the moment to the both of them that she was struggling.

Chidori tried to emphasize her words using gestures. She pointed to the trash bin first, then to the recycling, a word she definitely had little ability to pronounce right now.

"It berri rood. Carefuru, err, nochi [next] time. Ah! Kore wa totemo muzukashii desu! [Ahh! This is so hard!]"

The blinking lights and constant clamor of eight bit noises surrounding them seemed to endeavor to steal his attention away as the young girl tried to explain things to him. At first, the blonde had absolutely no idea what she was trying to convey. His brow wrinkled in confusion as she spoke, then he followed her gaze towards the trash bin she pointed at shortly thereafter. It was only then that he understood and, when he did, he covered his mouth with a single hand to muffle the embarrassed gasp. The recycling! How hadn't he'd seen it?! There was no good excuse.

"W-Watashi wa... baka desu! [I-I'm... an idiot!]" He proclaimed, removing his hand from his mouth only to smack it against his forehead in dismay. You'd think he'd be more aware of the recycling bins being from the 'green state' of the United States. Even if the bins were from another country and marked in a different language. With the flood of excitement that had rushed through him at the sight of the Moshimoshi Arcade and its crown jewel, he reasoned, he simply hadn't seen it.

Regardless, he had to show her he was truly sorry for practically littering in her country like that! Swiftly, he bowed in the direction of the young lass. He paused in the stance for a moment, struggling to come up with the words he intended. Then, he deeply sighed and straightened in posture as he produced the pocket Japanese dictionary from his person. Abashedly gesturing for her to hold on with a single finger, Sigmund flipped through a few pages before using the references contained therein to form a sentence. "Watashi wa... tsugunai o shitai. [I wish to make amends.]"

Looking up at the girl from behind the cover of his pockey dictionary, the hazel-eyed tourist gulped. "Anata wa... bideogēmu? [Would you like to... video game?]" If anything, kicking his ass in the virtual world might alleviate how irritated she'd clearly been with his act. Last thing he wanted was to insult the locals or leave them in bad spirits. So, taking the initiative to swipe his card at the token machine, Sigmund gathered the pocketful he had purchased and offered the girl one. "Eeto... watashi wa... Siegmund. [Um... my name is... Sigmund.]"

"Maa.. [Jeez..]"

Chidori placed a hand on her forehead, her frustrations easing into embarassment. The boy was making an earnest try to communicate with her as well, even going as far as to pull out a pocket dictionary in order to do so. How could she stay mad at him when he was going through all the motions of being polite and making an earnest effort to better himself?

As he spoke, and whenever he looked up from his little book, he'd be able to notice her stance ease more and more and her lips to curl up into a smile.

"Anata no namae wa.. Shiggumondo.. desu ka? [Your name is.. Sigmund.. then?]"

It was quite difficult for her to say certain parts of his name, opting to instead say it as best as she could in her native tongue. The girl seemed to pause, placing the tip of her forefinger onto her chin before she beamed at him.

"Shigo-kun desu. [Then, Shigo-kun.]"

She had declared, giving him a new nickname to encourage the familiarization of the two, but also to alleviate the pain of having to try and pronounce his name over and over.

"Watashi no namae wa Chidori desu. Watashi wa amari yoku arimasen, raku ni itte kudasai. [My name's Chidori. I'm not very good, so please go easy.]"

Almost as if she had felt the two had gotten very close too quickly, the girl immediately went back to speaking Japanese to him. Her tongue slipped out a bit in a cutesey manner as she held up one hand before her face as if in a half-praying manner. She walked on over, swiping her own card into the token machine before taking a hold of the controls and looking over to the boy with a smile.

Sigmund rather liked her nickname for him, actually. The young blonde could see himself using that from now on during his temporary stay in Japan. After all, it was no secret that even he had trouble pronouncing his own name in a way that would be easy to repeat in Japanese. Shigo was a nice alternative, and from the mind of a native Japanese citizen, no less. Feeling the mood lighten up like a ray of sunlight breaking through a stormy cloud, Sigmund smiled brightly when she introduced herself. "Hajimemashite, eeto... Dori-chan! [Nice to meet you, um... Dory!]" He replied.

Finding that the suffix fit well considering her sudden shift into a rather cute demeanor, Sigmund abashedly laughed. "Watashi wa, eeto... mattaku sainō ga nai? Yakusoku shimasu! [I'm not, um... very talented at all. I promise!]" He tried to explain, struggling to come up with a few of the words at times. He certainly didn't take offense when she denied the token he offered and instead went ahead to garner her own. If anything, that meant she wanted to have more than a few matches with him! Eager, he flexed his fingers and readied happily himself at his post.

"Umm..." He thought to himself, looking upwards as he scoured his mind for the words. When he finally did, his eyes brightened and he turned towards her. "Junbi wa deki taka? [Are you ready?]" The blonde foreigner inquired, readying his token at the token slot. One push of the coin and the game would activate, displaying a roster of over thirty amazingly designed characters to choose from onscreen!

Chidori smiled. At least the boy was picking up on things a bit, and he was even nice enough to familize himself with her by giving her a nickname as well. Rather than watch either of them struggle any further in trying to adopt the other's language and dialect, Chidori brought up a hand and placed a single finger across her own smiling lips.

The advantage of having a disability growing up is that you know how to get around without the conveniences that others take for granted, that and you can imagine a world where things aren't always as they should be. The young girl was more than capable of speaking and listening, but for now she wanted them to just enjoy the game and show one another what was on the inside without the convenient means of regular communication.

To express oneself beyond ordinary boundaries.

Chidori gave him a wink and a nod before turning to face the game screen, her hands ready to engage in what would surely be an intense game filled with joy and frustration.

The announcer in the game counted down: "San, ni, ichi, hajime!!!" and they were off.

Before he knew it, the girl had started the game. Quickly inserting his own token to catch up to her, the blonde barista excitedly looked through the roster in the thirty seconds they had to choose their mech fighters. Sigmund still wasn't proficient in reading Japanese-- not quickly, anyway-- so he settled with choosing a mech he was familiar with instead of painstakingly translating their names and abilities. He went with a blue and white mech with a plasma sword and ion rifle, smirking when he locked in his final decision.

After Dori had chosen her fighter (or the timer had run out), the digital announcer would countdown and the match would finally start!

It was easy to tell Sigmund was a first-timer. It was easy to tell that he probably wasn't good at fighting games in general. But you wouldn't know that if you were looking solely at his beaming expression throughout the match. The game was amazing. Getting his ass whooped in glorious mech combat was perfectly fine when the visuals, combos, and ultimates were as flashy and true to the anime as they were here. And the soundtrack was absolutely killer. It was revamped version of the score used in the first game! It had him tapping rhythmically on the buttons when he should have been focusing on combos instead.

Every combo that he did pull off, Chidori would return twofold. She was either incredibly skilled at video games or the trash talk he'd received from his friends back in America was true. She may have ended up winning every single round in that first match, but Sigmund certainly had put up a fight. In the last, he'd focused solely on defense, playfully begging her in English not to finish him off before she issued an ultimate that sent his head flying backwards with a groan.

He came back laughing and wiping his eyes, Chidori's animated mech sprite standing triumphantly over the wreckage of his own.

The game had begun! If there was one thing definitively known around the streets of Akihabara, it was that Chidori was a consummate professional when it came to all things fighting. She was no black belt in martial arts, bare handed or not, but she was great when it came to just whoopin' another school kid's ass. This applied to real life as well as video games, and unfortunately for Shigo to her side she was a champion in these realms.

The two were off after they had chosen their respective mobile suits. Chidori had always favoured the one that was black, blue with varying red highlighted areas. It wielded two claw like weapons on each hand and so was built for close-ranged speedy combat.

The blaring music was enough to get the young girl's heart pounding in excitement, turning her seemingly innocent demeanor into one of ferocious joy. Chidori found a particularly fulfilled purpose when she was engaging another person in some manner of contest, and it showed in the video game as she repeatedly put Shigo's mobile suit to the dirt. With several consecutive victories, she glanced over at the boy who seemed joyous, regardless of losing.

His expression, the passionate way he played, it spoke to her heart that he was almost like kin to her. Chidori gave him a large smile, almost beaming like the radiant sun towards him.

After a moment Chidori reached into her pocket and pulled out two small pieces of paper. The girl held them up about face level between her and Shigo and pointed to one. It was written in Japanese, of course, but the visuals of it displayed similar mobile suits to the ones they had just played with in their game. And nearing the bottom was a code. It was a voucher for a free digital download of the game coming to consoles in a month, something she had won in a recent gaming tournament.

Chidori held it out to him with a welcoming gaze. The second slip of paper was a similar voucher, but for two desserts, evident by the display of an icecream cone and cherry float on the front. It had the number "2" printed on the front in roman numbers, and with that displayed between them she pointed towards herself and the boy.

The blonde foreigner was equal parts glad and relieved that Dori wasn't the sort to gloat. She definitely could have, with how soundly he had been defeated at the game. But, as things were, she simply smiled back at him and presented two vouchers. Sigmund blinked, tilting his head to the side as he tried to translate the text upon the voucher on the spot. He was alarmed at the first, and quickly shook his head as he embarrassedly chuckled. "No, no-- I can't take that! I lost!" He chimed with laughter, speaking in English but certain that his raised hands and shaking head were enough to convey what he was saying without words. "You deserve it. But thank you. Arigato gozaimasu. [Thank you very much.]"

A small and respectful bow was issued by the young man, but it was cut short when he realized what the second voucher was for. As she pointed between the two and confirmed the fact, a flush of red blushed his pale cheeks. With any luck, it was masked beneath the glow of the arcade lights that rhythmically flashed on and off like electronic fireflies around them. As if he hadn't understood her the first time, Sigmund tentatively pointed at himself to reaffirm the fact that she meant him. She was certainly what many would consider a good-looking girl and he'd never been asked out by one. So it was only natural that he check.

Should she confirm, Sigmund would abashedly grin and nod his head, liable to be pulled away or follow where ever she so lead.

She was a bit disappointed when Shigo didn't take the voucher for the free digital download of the game, but.. Well, she'd figure that out later. At the very least he didn't seem to wish to stand her up completely, especially when she had confirmed that indeed she was asking him out to come have a little dessert. It was almost an apologetic treat for the boy after beating him so badly in the video game, but really she was just waiting to use this voucher before it expired.

Reaching over and grabbing the boy by his wrist, she happily drug him out of the arcade and casually made her way down the street just a half-block away. It was nice to have everything so close together here near Arcadeville, including an icecream shop. Once the two got there, Chidori handed the voucher over before grabbing a nice little pamphlet that had pictures by most of the items on the menu. It wasn't a particularly large menu since it was only a small shop in between a couple other arcades, but it was somewhere she loved to come to in her off time.

Chidori laid the menu down on the counter between the two and held it open, looking over to him with a smile before staring down at it and reading over it's contents. She would obviously help him order if he needed to, but she was also curious to see just how much Japanese he understood, to include reading.

[Magic Ways - Tatsuro Yamashita]

Akihabara looked different in the hand of a Japanese resident. Dori tugged him along out of the delightfully noisy arcade and down the densely busy block, towards a quaint little ice cream shop Sigmund might never have noticed was there. He'd have gotten the door for her (the least he could do, considering she was sharing this treat with him) but Dori continued to take the lead as they entered and the chime on the glass door sang. Equal parts fascinated and thrilled, the young blonde gladly took his seat next to her once they reached the counter and its cushioned bar stools. Graciously, he thanked her again when she handed over the second voucher to him.

Of course, he didn't really feel like he deserved any of this. But that was just part of the package when it came to Sigmund Sauer. Regardless, the thought clouded his mood a bit before he turned to Dori and caught her smiling at him. He hadn't become instantly aware of the special bond they'd formed in 'battle', but every time they looked at each other Sigmund felt a pang of warmth in his heart. It felt almost as if they were old friends in another lifetime and now here they were, catching up to that over ice cream.

Regarding the menu, the foreigner took the initiative to look through it himself, leaning forward to squint his eyes at some of the unfamiliar script. Although he hardly registered it, the hazel-eyed lad touched shoulders with Dori as he endeavored to read the side of the menu that was closest to her. He bit his lip. His reading wasn't exactly as stellar as his speaking (which, of course, wasn't that stellar either). So, giving up with an embarrassed chuckle, Sigmund tapped on the cute little picture of an ice cream sundae with a cherry on top. "This one!" He gladly remarked, turning to Dori whilst remaining unaware of the fact that he was leaning so close that their faces would only be inches apart. "Does the voucher cove--" That dastardly blush reemerged and this time he felt it in the chilliness of the parlor.

He dissolved into a mess of chuckles, casually regaining his composure and straightening in his seat. "I'm sure it's covered. Anata ga hoshī mono o shitte imasu ka? [Do you know what you want?]" He inquired, gulping down the awkwardness shortly thereafter.
